1. Pine Meadow Golf Club - Mundelein, IL

This tree-filled course has a history that dates to 1921 when Cardinal Mundelein sketched out the first nine holes. It has now been renovated and updated several times, expanded to 18 holes, and has won a golf-cart load of awards, including "America's Best New Public Golf Course" by Golf Digest in 1986.

2. Harborside International Golf Center - Chicago, IL

This course boasts a unique setting on reclaimed land near Lake Calumet and offers striking views of the Chicago skyline and waning industrial setting. Choose the "port" course if you can. Won "Third Best Municipal Golf Course" in the country courtesy of Golf Week magazine. Golf & Travel likes it, too. Located about 15 minutes south of downtown Chicago.

3. Cog Hill Golf & Country Club - Lemont, IL

Joann Dost/Cog Hill Golf Course
Course number 4 is the former, notoriously difficult home of the Western Open. Nicknamed "Dubsdread," choose this course or number 2 when you go. This course has also sunk a bunch of big name awards, including being named to GolfWorld's Readers' Choice Top 50 Public Courses for 2009.
