Overview of the Chicago Marathon:
The Chicago Marathon started in 1977 with 4200 runners and a five buck registration fee. It has since grown to a world-class marathon with a cap of 45,000 participants.The 26.2 mile marathon is loved by runners the world over for its flat surface and usually (but not always) favorable October weather conditions. But, for those of us who live here, it's also an exhilarating celebration of neighborhoods, athleticism, and perseverance. Find out below how to join in as a runner or spectator.

The next Bank of America Chicago Marathon will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2009.- The start and finish line will be in Grant Park on Columbus Drive near Buckingham Fountain. (Map of approximate start and finish line.)
- Wheelchair start is at 7:55 am CST
- Marathon start is at 8:00 am CST

How Do I Register?:
Registration for the race opened at midnight (CST) on February 1. It was capped at 45,000 runners, and officially closed on April 23 when that cap was met.- Go to the Online Registration Page for the Chicago Marathon online.
- If you've registered, be sure to CONFIRM your registration online.
For Chicago Marathon Runners:
- If you'd like, you can join a pace team to help you reach your goals.
- You may qualify for or want to join one of the elite, top 100, or start corrals. Learn more here about those options via this link.
- Full race rules and regulations via this link.
- No baby joggers, pets, in-line skates, bicycles and other non-official wheeled vehicles are allowed on the course.
- The race will close (end) six and a half hours after the start. The finish line facilities will close at 3pm.
Tracking Your Favorite Chicago Marathon Runner:
Marathon officials set up ten tracking stations throughout the race course so you can check in and follow your loved ones or favorite athletes. The online tracking system usually goes live on or around September 1.You can find the locations of the physical tracking stations and the online options here.
For Chicago Marathon Spectators:
The first Chicago Marathon was promoted with the tag line, "The peoples race anyone can come and enjoy." That still holds true today.If you have a lawn chair or can find a curb side, you can enjoy witnessing the dedication and perseverance of your fellow human beings while they chase down a dream. Or, if you prefer something less noble, you can also see people running in chicken costumes.
