Bike the Drive

Jennifer Roche

Bike the Drive Overview:

Bike the Drive kicks the cars off of beautiful Lake Shore Drive so you can peacefully ride your bike along it. You get to admire Chicago from one of its best vantage points.

All eight lanes are open for riders along a 15 mile stretch. If you make the entire loop (north and south), it's a 30 mile ride.

Bank of America sponsors Bike the Drive along with the City of Chicago. Proceeds benefit Active Transportation Alliance, a non-profit biking, walking, and transit advocacy organization.

Bike the Drive Date and Time:

Sunday, May 24, 2009.

The event begins at 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. CST. It takes place rain or shine.

Bike the Drive Location - Starting and Ending Points:

Butler Field
Grant Park
Columbus and Jackson
Chicago, IL

The reality of this massive event is that you can often jump on the drive at some points. However, please don't do that to skip out on the registration fees.

Remember, the event supports one of Chicago's meaningful non-profits, so be sure to register or send an equivalent donation if you ride in it. Don't be a cheapskate.

Also, officially, you're not allowed to jump on anywhere but the starting point. And, you have wear your registration number. So, be prepared to hear that from organizers or Chicago's Finest and plan accordingly.

Bike the Drive Route:

The ride is set up as a loop. It's a 15 mile stretch of the Drive, so if you can ride a full 30 miles if you choose.

Route Start: North from starting point in Grant Park to Hollywood Avenue rest stop/turn around.

Return South to Museum of Science and Industry rest stop/turn around.

Route Ending Point: Grant Park
