The Vienna Beef hot dog has almost become synonymous with Chicago. It has a history that dates back to the 1893 World's Fair when founders Emil Reichel and Sam Ladany introduced their hot dogs to the massive crowds. The new delicacy was greeted with hearty approval and helped launched the hot dog into the American diet.

Since then, Vienna Beef's reputation for hot dogs made from 100% domestic beef (and beef trimmings) have made them a fast-food staple at dog stands and restaurants across the country.

Vienna Beef Factory Store - Guide Comments

The clock on the left tells the time on Chicago's South Side while the one on the right reports the time in the Loop.

This no-frills headquarters factory store of the world famous Vienna Beef hot dogs is a must-visit for any hot dog fan and seeker of authentic Chicago experiences.

In addition to selling everything from Weenie Wear (T-shirts) to hot dogs priced for every budget, they also carry hamburgers, polish sausages, corn dogs, condiments, cheesecake and more. There's also a cafe where you can sample Vienna Beef products at very fair price.

A lot of the Vienna Beef Factory store offerings are in giant-sized servings so you can really reap the savings. For example 25 jumbo franks ran $24 and a box with about 60 polish sausage ran $48. Hamburgers were $17 for 20.

Although you may come for the hot dogs, you'll come back for the local flavor like the wonderful ladies who work behind the counter. You can also check out their west wall of clocks. There's one tracking time (incorrectly) for each Chicago hot spot: North Side, South Side, the Loop, and the Lakefront.

The Vienna Beef Factory store is a true Chicago institution and worthy of a trip. I'm also tagging it as "best of Chicago."
