South Shore Cultural Center Overview:

The South Shore Country Club was formed in 1906 as a bucolic recreational facility to serve privileged families. The current structure was designed by architects Marshall & Fox and built in 1916.

The demographics of the neighborhood shifted significantly in the early 1960s, bringing a larger population of African-Americans to the area. Within about a decade, the club, which had a policy of excluding blacks, went out of business.

The Chicago Park District bought the building in 1974, revised its name, and renovated it in 1983. In 1992 Barack Obama and Michelle Obama held their wedding reception here.
