Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, Chicago, IL

A Photo Tour

From Jennifer Roche, About.com

The Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool is located in Lincoln Park, just south of Fullerton Parkway between Stockton and Cannon Drives. It is open every day from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. Admission is free.

It was built during 1936 to 1938 with funds from the Works Progress Administration, but a Victorian garden had existed on its site since 1889.

The lily pool and garden was designed by noted landscape architect Alfred Caldwell, who worked in the Prairie School style. The site fell into disrepair over the years, but in 2001 the Chicago Park District rehabilitated the garden to its current splendor. In 2002 it was designated a Chicago Landmark.

Today the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool is among the most meditative, natural settings in the city.
