From Jennifer Roche, for About.com

On Sunday, February 8, 2009, Chicago native Jennifer Hudson won her first Grammy for Best R & B Album. The award was presented by Whitney Houston. Hudson received it for her self-titled album.

After hugging Houston and accepting the award, Hudson made her first public comments since the murder of her mother, brother, and nephew in Chicago the fall before.

“I don’t really know what to say. First of all I’ve got Whitney Houston presenting me and wow. I’m just in awe right now.

But, I would first like to thank God who has brought me through. I would like to thank my family in heaven and those who are here today. Clive Davis. Mary Rice. Everyone at [not clear].

Walter my friend and everything. David who’s here with me tonight. My sisters who are here. I just don’t know where to start. Everybody. Thank you all. Thank you."
