Things to Do in Chicago During Its First Full Month of Spring

April is a busy month in Chicago with baseball, festivals and more. Temperatures average 57°and average precipitation is 3.5". Easter Weekend - March 29 - 31, 2013: Easter Sunday is on March 31, 2013, a couple weeks early this year.

Chicago White Sox Home Opener - April 1, 2013: The Chicago White Sox start their 2013 season against the Kansas City Royals starting at 3:10 p.m.

Sequins at Breakfast - April 5, 2013: Cru Kitchen & Bar is joining with Bright Pink for “Sequins at Breakfast,” 9 am - 11 am on Friday, April 5, a women-focused networking breakfast celebrating women, empowerment, food and fashion. Tickets are $35 per person and a portion of the proceeds benefits Bright Pink. Glittery girl talk will be led by Lindsay Avner of Bright Pink and Erica Strama of The Shops at North Bridge, followed by breakfast and a raffle. Swag bags will also be given away to 50 lucky ladies. Purchase tickets.

Chicago Detours - April 5, 2013: On Friday, April 5, Chicago Detours inaugurates their new quarterly, one-off "Detours" with a "Nonsensical Walk of Indoor Spaces." This walk, which weaves through downtown lobbies, Pedways, short-cuts and corridors, will expand a person's understanding of the geographical space downtown. Participants will get to experience architectural "eye candy" while playing a moving game of telephone that will share historic and contemporary background on the buildings as they walk through them. The two-hour-long walk will be held Friday, April 5, 4 pm-6 pm. Group meets in the Pedway atrium of Block 37 at 108 North State Street and ends near the intersection of LaSalle and Jackson. Tickets are $20 and guests receive special gifts. Reservations are required.

Chicago Cubs Opener - April 8, 2013: The season-opening road trip for the Cubs features three games against Pittsburgh (April 1, 3-4) and three games in Atlanta (April 5-7). Chicago’s first homestand features 10 games covering three series against Milwaukee (three games, April 8-10), San Francisco (four games, April 11-14) and the club’s first interleague series of the season against the 2010 and 2011 American League champion Texas Rangers (three games, April 16-18).

Chicago International Movies and Music Festival (CIMM) - starts April 19, 2013: An independent film festival organized by not only filmmakers but musicians as well. According to the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival: "The mission of the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival (CIMMfest) is to highlight the crossover of film and song through the production of an annual 4-day, multi-venue festival in Chicago. We strive to shed light on the interconnectedness of all people, around the world, through the lens of music and moving image, both recorded and performed live. All of the films screened at CIMMfest have music at their center: short- and long-form documentaries and narrative fiction; concert films; animation; and music videos; along with related performances and concerts, art exhibits, and panel discussions, presented at historic and famous venues around Chicago. Operating as a nonprofit organization, we provide a platform for filmmakers and musicians to present their vision and a connection point for like-minded artists, directors, producers, fans, and aficionados to come together for a celebration of movies, music, and great times in the greatest city on earth: Chicago."

Lincoln Park Zoo Animals Party for the Planet - April 20, 2013: The residents of the Lincoln Park Zoo will celebrate Earth Day with green-themed piñatas while zoo members receive special perks. Whether it is rhinos that recycle or goats going organic, Chicago’s favorite critters will be sharing a message of conservation while enjoying eco-friendly enrichment as part of Party for the Planet – the world’s largest collective Earth Day celebration. The fun starts at 9 a.m. and continues throughout the day at various exhibits around the zoo.

Money Smart Week - April 20 - April 27, 2013: The 12th annual Money Smart Week is back in Chicago. Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign to promote financial literacy across all age groups. Launched in 2002 by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the program is now active in more than 35 states through national partnerships with the American Library Association and the Financial Planning Association. This year’s event will feature 500 free financial education programs from April 20 - 27. Money Smart Week events are open to the public at businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, nonprofits and government agencies throughout the Chicago area on topics including kids and money, unemployment, managing student debt and retirement. Many of the events are offered in different languages.

Race to Wrigley - Not in April This Year. Instead Held on May 11, 2013: This popular 5K race benefits Chicago Cubs Charities and starts and finishes at the iconic Wrigley Field (Clark and Addison). Start time for the chip timed race is 8 a.m. Start time for the "fun run/no chip time" is 8:10 a.m. Chicago Cubs Charities supplements the efforts of the Chicago Cubs team to improve the lives of children and families across Chicago. In making grants and undertaking sponsorships, Chicago Cubs Charities supports youth sports, fitness and health, education and literacy, children with special needs, the Lakeview Community, MLB related events, and Cubs Care donations.
