Veterans Day Events in Chicago

By November 3, 2011

Follow me on:

Veterans' Day will be celebrated on November 11, 2011 (also known as 11/11/11). The City of Chicago will be hosting a Veterans' Day Ceremony honoring those who have served in times of peace as well as war. The event starts at 11 a.m. at Soldier Field.

The Lincoln Park Zoo is also honoring Veterans on Veterans ' Day. To show appreciation for those who have served, the zoo is offering treats, tours, and activities on November 11. Veterans and their families will get 11% off food and retail purchases. Parking will be $11 (compared to the zoo's normal rate of $17), and kids can ride the Endangered Species carousel for .11 cents. The zoo is also offering veterans the chance to do some special tours of the zoo, as well as an exclusive giraffe feeding at 11 a.m. - and the first 11 visitors to Wild Things! will win goodies bags.

The Lincoln Park Zoo's Veterans Day events will begin at 10 a.m. on November 11 and go through 5 p.m. The zoo is located at Cannon Drive and Fullerton Parkway. (Be sure and also check out the zoo's annual ZooLights festival that begins on November 25.)

Last year I went to the memorial at Soldier Field on Veteran’s Day. I can’t begin to explain how upset I was that more people didn’t show up. We are one of the largest cities in this country and not only do we have the pathetic Veteran’s Day Memorial, but the city does nothing to support it. I am hopeful this year will be different, if not I am happy to drive to Indianapolis where they have a parade and show support for our wonderful veterans.

Veterans Day in Chicago is a non event, sad but true. I will never go Soldier Field again, It is not worth the effort. I’m a Korean War Vet, and if I wanted recognition I would have to go to Washington DC.
Chicago does nothing to Honot it’s Veterans.
