The Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum re-opens for the summer season on May 15, but is it worth a visit?
My recommendation is a qualified but warm yes. Here are the four points I think you should know before you go:
- Go to understand our city's extraordinary collection of bridges and to get unique peeks (like the one above) of the city's landscape.
- Also go to get a sense of the Chicago River's history as an expressway of commerce and a natural resource.
- Don't make it your only reason for heading to Michigan Avenue. It's a small museum and you'll move through it quickly, so tack on something else or duck in for a quick visit during your lunch hour.
- Know that the museum is very poorly accessible for persons with physical disabilities. It's an actual bridgehouse, so it's very vertical and, therefore, loaded with stairs.
