Are you Happy to See the Children's Museum Move to Grant Park?

Thursday June 12, 2008
The Chicago City Council voted yesterday to allow the Chicago's Children's Museum to relocate to Grant Park, despite strenuous objections from many who saw the move as a violation of our community requirement to keep the lakefront free from structures and as a further poaching of our disappearing green space.

I have to say I agree with the opponents. I'm sorry to see the precedent of lakefront protection steamrolled by a intermittently green mayor.

I also don't think it's a good thing for this city if we use Millennium Park as the visionary template for all of our green space. Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of MP. I think it verges on the wondrous that it was built on what used to be air above some ugly train tracks. But, it's not where I go for respite and restoration. As amazing as it is, it's got one foot firmly planted in the world of entertainment.

In the Children's Museum in Grant Park situation, the city is taking an existing natural green space, and, in my opinion, moving it closer to an entertainment venue. I think that's a very concerning precedent.

What do you think?
