Viking Ship Winnerof Partners in Preservation Grant 2007American Express and The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced the 15 winners today of a Chicagoland preservation contest. The chosen historic sites will share more than $1 million in grant money for restoration and care, including this antique replica of a historic Viking ship at right.

The Viking ship is located in Geneva, Illinois, but has fallen into extreme disrepair and has been sitting under an outdoor canopy for more than a decade. According to the press release, parts of it remain in storage at the Museum of Science & Industry. This photo shows the ship sailing in Chicago in 1893. It was displayed at the Columbian Exposition held here that same year.
